Preparing for Your Boudoir Shoot: Everything You Need to Know

The Journey to Confidence Starts Here

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered what it would feel like to truly see yourself as radiant, powerful, and beautiful? A boudoir shoot is more than just a photo session—it’s an experience designed to awaken your confidence, celebrate your journey, and remind you of the gorgeous, empowered woman you are.

If you've been considering a boudoir shoot but feel a little nervous about the preparation process, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Whether you're stepping in front of the camera to commemorate a milestone, rediscover your femininity, or simply indulge in self-care, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about preparing for your boudoir shoot with Fox and Vixen Boudoir.

Why Boudoir? A Celebration of You

There’s something magical about stepping into the spotlight and seeing yourself through a new lens. Boudoir photography is not about changing who you are—it’s about capturing the essence of your confidence, beauty, and individuality. Our boudoir clients often say their session left them feeling revitalized, confident, and truly seen.

Here’s what some of our clients had to say:

"Mike and Angi provided an incredible experience start to finish. They spent time before my shoot making sure they knew my style and preferences, provided lots of great guidance on how to prepare, and touched base often to make sure I was ready and comfortable on shoot day. During the shoot, I appreciated the amount of time they devoted to getting every detail in pose, angle, camera setting, and the lighting just right. At my scheduled photo viewing session, I was literally blown away by the results. The presentation process was amazing and they really helped us to drill down to the best of the best. Finally, the prints and photo books I purchased were beyond expectations in quality, and I’m so so happy with them." – Caroline S.

"O-M-G!! I had a shoot about two months ago and I’ve been in shock ever since. My pictures turned out amazing beyond my wildest beliefs. I told myself for years that I’d do this after I lost weight or things settled down. Those things never happened, but I bit the bullet anyway, and I am soooo glad I did. I promise you will leave this session feeling beautiful and empowered. And the feeling returns every single time you look back at your pictures. Trust me, just do it!! You won’t regret it!" – Amanda N.

Ready to experience this for yourself? Let’s dive into how to prepare.

Step 1: Wardrobe – What to Bring & What to Avoid

What to Bring

Your outfits should make you feel confident, sexy, and true to yourself. We recommend bringing at least 8-10 outfit options so that we can help you select the most flattering and versatile looks for your shoot. Here are some must-haves:

  • A Variety of Styles: Include a mix of lingerie sets, lingerie bodysuits, corsets, and even oversized button-down shirts or silky robes.

  • Structured Pieces: Lingerie bodysuits and shapewear are excellent for defining curves and enhancing your silhouette. Be sure to choose styles designed as intimate wear rather than those meant to be layered under everyday outfits, as these will complement your shape beautifully in photos.

  • A Killer Bra & Panty Set: Well-fitting lingerie is key! Matching sets tend to look best, as slightly different shades can be exaggerated in photos. Aim for bras with strong support and panties that complement your shape.

  • Casual or Cozy Option: Not every look needs to be bold and revealing. Bring something soft and cozy, like an off-the-shoulder sweater, a silk robe, or an oversized knit cardigan for a more relaxed and intimate feel.

  • Something Personal & Sentimental: A piece of clothing or an object with meaning—like a piece of heirloom jewelry or a signature fragrance—can make your session feel even more personal. If you’re considering bringing your partner’s shirt, keep in mind that very oversized shirts can be bulky and may not highlight your figure in the most flattering way. Fitted button-downs or structured fabrics tend to work better than loose, shapeless options.

  • Matching or Themed Sets: If you love a cohesive aesthetic, consider bringing pieces that work well together across different looks. A lace bodysuit in multiple colors, coordinated accessories, or layers that can be styled in different ways will give you variety in your final images.

  • Accessories: Statement jewelry, stockings, garters, and even meaningful props (a leather jacket, an instrument, or something sentimental) can add a personal touch.

  • Backup Undergarments: Extra nude or black thongs, strapless bras, or seamless underwear are always useful in case something unexpected happens or if we find a better pairing for an outfit.

Shoes: From Subtle to Standout

  • Heels in a Neutral or Skin Tone Shade: Bring at least one pair of neutral heels to elongate your legs, but don’t be afraid to bring your fabulous, standout shoes too! If you love bold colors or unique styles, they can add personality to your photos.

  • Ankle Straps: Some styles can visually shorten your legs, but this isn’t a hard rule—if you love them, bring them! What matters most is that you feel amazing in your shoes.

  • The Higher, the Better: Taller, thinner heels create longer-looking legs. And don’t worry—we won’t make you walk in them!

What to Avoid

  • Neon Colors & Busy Patterns: These can distract from your natural beauty and affect the lighting.

  • Loose or Opaque Fabrics: Babydoll lingerie and empire waist gowns may not create the most flattering shapes.

  • Overly Trendy Pieces: Choose timeless, classic styles that you’ll still love years from now.

  • Shoes That Show Wear & Tear: The bottoms of your heels may be visible in some shots, so bring a pair in good condition.

Step 2: Prepping Your Body & Mind

The Most Important Thing: Eat Before Your Shoot!

You don’t need to eat right before your session, but please don’t starve yourself thinking it will make you look better. Boudoir sessions are physically demanding, and many clients compare them to a workout. You will burn calories, you may be sore afterward, and if you don’t eat, you might feel weak or lightheaded, or even worse, hangry. 😊 Eat normally the day before and have a light, balanced meal before your session.

Other Key Prep Tips:

  • Start Planning Early – Begin shopping for outfits at least a month in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

  • Try Everything On – Ill-fitting lingerie can’t be fixed in Photoshop, so make sure everything fits well before your session.

  • Manicure Matters – Remove chipped polish and opt for neutral tones. Bright or dark colors can be distracting.

  • Grooming & Beauty Prep – Do waxing, shaving, and any root touch-ups a day before. Don’t try a new hairstyle or drastic color change right before your shoot.

  • Get Plenty of Sleep – Beauty rest is real! Sleep well and drink lots of water the day before.

  • Practice Facial Expressions – Take a few minutes to practice soft smiles and sultry looks in the mirror. It might feel silly, but it will help you feel more comfortable posing.
